Nicole
Private pilot
I am a teacher in a child development center for 3-5 years old, and also a
Girl Scout leader for the juniors in the Community Outreach program. I
live in Carter Lake, Iowa. I have two dogs - a purebred beagle Belle, and a
beagle/dachshund mix Shadow. I volunteer with the EAA Young Eagle
program, and volunteer my time with several organizations including
Soldier Angels.
I remember going to air shows, thinking how cool and exciting it would be
to be flying an in airshow. I remember going to aviation museums and
thinking I could do that one day. I live by the airport, and I was constantly
looking up in the sky.
I became a private pilot last year. My biggest setback was having different
instructors, and financial reasons, as I was just getting back on my feet.
But I finally did it, and now I look back, and think that this was the best
investment I could have made, as I will always remember my first solo, the
day I passed my checkride.
I learned how to fly at the Omaha Flight Academy in Omaha, Nebraska. I
fly a Cessna 172, both regular and the glass panel. I still fly the 172.
Flying is a hobby right now, but I am working on my instrument and
hopefully after that, work on my instrument rating. I teach in a child
development center, and work for the Girl Scouts.
At my child care job, I love the fact, I can open the eyes of young children
to all the possibilities that there are for the younger generation. At my girl
scout job, I love working with the 4-6 graders, and opening their eyes that
there are more and more possibilities for girls now then there was when I
was growing up and that it doesn't matter where you grow up, that the
possibilities are endless.
I get reactions every time I see people I used to hang out with, when I tell
them that I got my pilot certificate now. It's even funnier when I tell them
I have competed in air racing, and planning on doing the Air Race Classic
this year. I think the funniest reaction was at my workplace, when the
pilot I co-piloted for showed up at my work to drop off some books for an
upcoming race. The lady working the front desk was surprised, as she had
no clue that I was a pilot, and I had been working there for over a year.
What role do skills in math, science, engineering and technology play in
supporting your job? Math, Science and Technology are becoming more in
demand. I have set up science center for my little kids, as I think science
is important as we use it almost everyday. Technology is ever changing
and it's important that we keep up with the times. I look back and I think
just how much technology has changed from when I was growing up, like
the computers are getting smaller and quicker.
My future plans is to get my commercial rating, and hopefully start working
on aerobatics or formation flying, as I think this is the way I want to use
my pilot's license, or work for a smaller business as a pilot.

Using aviation to entertain and educate girls about their limitless opportunities...
