Flight Attendant

I'm a Flight Attendant with Horizon Air based in Seattle, Washington.  I am
currently serving the Flight Attendants in SEA as a Local Council President of
the Association of Flight Attendants-Which is an association of Professional
Flight Attendants 55,000+ members strong! I am a Mother of 3 grown Sons,
and have a 2yr old grand-daughter and future girl with wings!:-) I'm a
football junkie high school, college and professional...love it all!  But my one
true joy is flying!

My Father was a mechanic for TWA in the late 60's to mid 70's.  My fondest
memories were when he would have to work rotation weekends and would
take me to the hangar with him.  I would play on A/C that had seats removed
for inspection and cleaning.  I remember getting "lucky" finding treats left
behind in the galley, although I'm almost certain finding them was a setup by
my Father's co-workers!  The hanger and all those BIG, BIG planes as my
Saturday morning playground, was so overwhelming and fun!

I was offered a position to attend American Airlines Ground School in 1994.
Unfortunately, my boys were heavily involved in sports and needed a Mother
full time.  I reluctantly declined to go, and missed my chance to fly the
majors. Then years later in 2005, after raising all the boys and having
success as a business owner, I coincidently scheduled a meeting at a local
hotel by the airport.  That same morning, Horizon Air was holding cattle call
interviews for Flight Attendants.  My appointment cancelled, and as I was
walking towards the exit of the hotel, a Horizon recruiter stopped me to ask
if I was there for the interview?  The question caught me by surprise, and
before I knew it, I was handed a stack of paperwork and shuffled into a room
filled with about 70 people.  I was the last to walk in, in my business suit, and
a briefcase.  The folks in the room watched me enter and sit on the side
seating area against the wall, while they sat in classroom style seating.  For a
few moments, people stared at me, almost nervously, so it made me uneasy
and kind of nervous myself.  I later found out that everyone thought I was
one of the recruiters!  I got a laugh out of that, and here I am today....flying
for Horizon air, and a Flight Attendant Union President.:-)  Amazing!

If I had to do it all over again, I'd have become a Pilot!  The dynamics of flying
inspire me, and I have so much respect for the women pilots in our Country!
The best part of my job is meeting people, and having the BEST office in the
world!  Nothing like flying early in the morning and seeing the sun rise first
hand!  Truly a blessing.

I find that most women always say: "I've always wanted to be a Flight
Attendant/Stewardess".  It's one of the jobs little girls think of, like nursing.

What activities do you suggest for young children or young adults to prepare
them for a career like yours? Customer Service experience is a plus with the
Flight Attendant Career.
