Ladies, in today's working world, we are told that we can have a career and
a family; that we are entitled to it and should expect it.

I believe that being a pilot is the most amazing job in the world.  Our
careers are unique and there are apparent drawbacks when considering
having a family, too.  There are many reasons that women pilots feel
intimated about starting a family, myself included:  Long trips away from
home often requiring outside help with the kids, odd hours and airport
food,  difficulty in reentering the pilot workforce once you have left for a
while to raise your children, and the requirement to always have good
health and strength.  Personally, I know many women pilots who are
mothers and who have dealt with these problems, some successfully, and
others who have decided to give up flying.

This past March, I was able to attend the Women in Aviation International
Conference in San Diego.  I was helping my good friend, Lynda Meeks,
spread the word about Girls with Wings, which inspires young women to
become interested in aviation.  I began to talk to many of the women that I
met about the challenges that we faced in being mothers and pilots, hoping
for some inspiration of my own.  The response was so inspiring and
encouraging that I felt everyone should share their stories on this website.
You see, if you try to find out info about being a pilot and a mom, you just
won't find any useful information on the internet, let alone an actual mom
whom you can talk to.   So let's get together and help each other!

Ladies, please share your stories and pictures on this website for all of us
to read and see!  Tell us about your struggles, your failures, and your
successes at being a career woman and a mom.  Here are some topics that
I know many women are curious about:  Physical strain while pregnant on
the job, spousal support, leaves of absences from your company,
discrimination from the company/other pilots, adopting children, scheduling
doctor visits,  and outside help with the kids, such as grandparents our
nannies.  If you like, leave us your contact info so that women can talk to
you privately when they have a question.

Ask your friends to contribute to this page as well.  Hopefully by sharing
your stories, you can help someone make the right decision for
themselves. And maybe inspire a few more young women to become pilots!
